Temperatures above freezing on Monday brought out heavy equipment to bash down the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Ice Palace. The slush that holds the heavy ice blocks in place had begun to melt, making it dangerous for visitors to go near the ice structure. The Ice Palace, rebuilt each year, serves as the centerpiece for the hugely popular festival. This year marked the carnival’s 120th anniversary.
