Nick Chakurmanian (right) lunges at fellow Plattsburgh State student Sam McFadden, delivering a crippling blow while defending his realm Sunday afternoon during the first-ever L.A.R.P. (live action role play) event on the field behind Memorial Hall. The objective was to steal the opposing team’s treasure from their castle and hold it for five minutes in order to secure a victory. During battle, a hit to the torso resulted in a “kill” and a blow to a limb made it unusable, while an additional strike to any part killed that player. Fallen warriors could also be resurrected by a mana (magic) user on their team.(P-R Photo/Gabe Dickens)

Liam Vogl, 13, of Plattsburgh and George Schock, a Plattsburgh State student, lay flowers on a “ghost bike” dedicated to Yee Hao “Bryan” Chiel. The roadside memorial was placed near the on-ramp for Exit 37 where Chiel was killed last month by a tractor-trailer while riding his bicycle. The ceremony was part of Petal to Protect — an event sponsored by the college’s Biketopia club to promote bike safety and advocate for safer streets for cyclists. Ghost bikes, a tradition that started in 2003 in Missouri, are usually junk bikes painted white and chained to a location near an accident to serve as a somber reminder of bike tragedies and to support cyclists’ rights.(P-R Photo/Gabe Dickens)
