The United States may have landed a spaceman on the moon, but this astronaut, Will Gillis, wondered how a figure of Elvis landed on top of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival ice palace. Elvis was first sighted there Saturday morning, lifted into place in the dark of night by a crane. The mannequin belongs to John and Colleen Vargo of the Eat 'n Meet restaurant in the village. The 2012 carnival is history now, but a slideshow of this year's highlights, sponsored by Cape Air, will be shown at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Saranac Village at Will Rogers.
